Summertime

Life always seemed so much simpler when you’re young

It always seemed so much more fun

In summer, the sun shone brighter than ever before

Shining down on us, as

We climbed trees, prank-called strangers

Ignorant of the dangers to come,

Of the never-setting sun

And we had the confidence

Of cocky little shits running around getting into
trouble

Nothing could ever burst our bubble

We rode bikes across town

Going round and round

Thinking we would stay young forever

That things would never change

Then we grew older

The days grew colder

And the bike-rides stopped

Instead, we got drunk in car-parks

Smoked our first cigarettes

I may or may not have coughed up my lungs

But even those came to a stop

There is the last time you go out to

Play with your friends and none of you ever knew it

Core memories that last a lifetime

No reason or rhyme

Why we should ever forget

What it was like to be young in that hot, so hot,
summer sun

We swapped Runescape allnighters

For cigarette lighters, lighting up our J’s

So we can remember those special, special days,

Of when we were young

Brainlickers, toxic waste, rotting tooth after tooth

but that was our youth. Our truth.

Just before the age of computers

And first-person shooters

Our group became smaller in the coming days

We went our separate ways

Sold our dreams for the 9-5

Staying alive for a life in the rat race

Something we could never face

Now, a new generation’s on the clock

With Gen Z and their bloody ticktock,

Buried in their phones all-day-long,

I sound like a boomer singing a cliched song

I’m joining the grumpy old boomers,

Hating all the zoomers, as I

Long for days gone past

Those fleeting summers that would never last,

Because those times are gone,

But the memories linger on

They always will until we’re old and grey

Long past our heyday

Looking into the rear-view mirror

At our own reflection

And we were far from perfection

We were kids, like everybody else

Running around all summer long

Before coming home to our Millennial TV

Nikelodeon and CBBC

Now CBBC has become Netflix,

We’ve become a generation of alienation

Ruled by nostalgia,

For those better times

The smoother rhymes

When life had a rhythm that we could control.

We weren’t lost in a hole of our own making

But slowly, we’re awakening, becoming the adults

We were meant to be,

And we see we’re not kids anymore. It’s not 2004

We shouldn’t afraid of what’s to follow

That’s a hard truth to swallow

But that’s life

No peaches and cream

Or American Dream
You take the good with the bad

  The happy with the sad

Yes, now we’re adults with responsibility

Accountability, paying bills all year long

But we don’t forget those warm summer days

Of when we were young.

Of our summertime.
