Horse and Carriage rides, bottle-washing and learning – WWOOF – day 18 02/10/19

I am doing WWOOF – a month-long programme where I am working on a French farm.  I am writing a daily blog about my experiences.  I will write in English and French.  My French isn’t perfect and there will be mistakes.  And I may use Frenglish.  I welcome all corrections.  I tend to transliterate more than translate, but I’m working to improve this.  Considering this, the French sections of the blog won’t be exact word-for-word translations from the English.  Firstly, the language doesn’t work like that and secondly, I make jokes and references in the English that won’t translate over to the French.

Matthias was teaching this morning, so I was working alone.  After the standard feeding the rabbits and sweeping up the barn, I continued washing bottles.  By midday, I had washed 28 more.  I took a proper headcount and realised that smaller rack (insert picture) holds 96 bottles.  At 12hr30, we had lunch and at 14hr, I continued washing bottles and I managed to wash the last 18.  96 bottles done.  404 to go.  Yay.

At 15hr, we had another group arrive for the horse and carriage rides.  The rides generally last for 30 minutes to an hour and we go around the village.

Today was very sunny, so the ride was lovely.  Generally, I sit in the back, but as the group were larger than usual, I sat up front with Matthias.

Yes, I’m aware that you are effectively looking at a horse’s arse.  The ride lasted an hour, from 3-4, and afterwards we shared a couple of bottles of apple juice.  This was the same group as last time, and it was nice seeing them again.  They left at 5 and work was over for the day.

We had our dinner at 19h30.  Oceane was out and Elisabeth was sick, so it was just Matthias and me.  We spoke about the horse and carriage earlier.  Matthias enjoys working with the mentally handicapped, but he wishes they could engage more with his work and the environment.  He finds it very tiring.  I work a lot with these kinds of people, and I explained that, because you can’t see the effect, doesn’t mean that there isn’t one.  It is far better, far more stimulating for them to be doing an activity like this, rather than vegetating in front of the TV.

We also spoke of the two different drinking cultures in England and France.  I said that in Europe, there is a more relaxed drinking culture compared to England.  For example, during mealtimes, children drink small amounts of alcohol with their parents.  They drink in moderation to help them get used to alcohol.  But Matthias categorically denied this.  He said he would never have done this with Oceane and he doesn’t believe it’s true.  Any French want to weigh in on this? Instead, he said that French teenagers want to get as drunk as possible, as fast as possible.  Like English teenagers and teenagers worldwide.

And that’s it for day 18, a day of horse and carriage rides, more bottle-washing and learning new things.

On apprit notre diner a 19hr30.

Ils boirent en moderation, so they can get use to alcohol.
