Bottle-Washing, Bottle-Washing and More Bottle-Washing – WWOOF Day 24 08/10/19

I am doing WWOOF – a month-long programme where I am working on a French farm.  I am writing a daily blog about my experiences.  I will write in English and French.  My French isn’t perfect and there will be mistakes.  And I may use Frenglish.  I welcome all corrections.  I tend to transliterate more than translate, but I’m working to improve this.  Considering this, the French sections of the blog won’t be exact word-for-word translations from the English.  Firstly, the language doesn’t work like that and secondly, I make jokes and references in the English that won’t translate over to the French.

Just a warning, today wasn’t the most exciting of days.  Whenever Matthias is teaching, my default work is to continue washing bottles.  That’s what I did this morning.  From 10-12, I washed 40 more bottles.  Only 344 to go! Although I realistically don’t think that I’ll have to wash all of the rest.

At 12hr30, we had lunch.  Oceane had gone out, so it was just Elisabeth and me.  Elisabeth asked me about my plans after WWOOF and I said I’m going straight back to work.  In fact I go back to work on October 17th.  Just over a week from the time that I’m writing this blog.  It’s going to be weird going back to my 9-5 after this.  She asked if I’m going to do WWOOF again and I said yes.  I definitely want to do it again.  This has been great for my French, far better than all the years that I learnt it in school.

We discussed how the way they teach languages in school is very poor.  There’s too much of an emphasis on grammar and rules, rather than the natural way of speaking.  Lunch ended at half 1 and Elisabeth told me that Matthias wouldn’t be back until 6, so I could continue washing bottles from 3-5.  And I washed another 40 bottles.  Only 304 to go! 80 bottles washed in a day!

After I finished, I deracked all of the clean bottles and set them to one side.  But at 5, because it’s Normandy, it started pouring with rain.  I had to run and hurriedly put them all inside.  At 8, I caught Jack – a task that is much easier now that I have all this bread.  At 20hr30, we had dinner.  Matthias told me that earlier on he was speaking with Nathaniel.  He said that he’ll be returning on the 15th of October.  It’ll be good to see him again, but it’s a shame that it’s on my last day.

Matthias also asked me now that I’ve been working here for three weeks, could I become a farmer? Maybe I could but with more practice and training.  He suggested that I start looking after one animal here and go from there.  Perhaps Jack (who is actually called Titeusse, but I’ll keep calling him Jack) Although I’d rather look after Mimi.  I like Mimi.  She reminds me of my residents, as she’s old, near blind and can’t walk.  I have a soft spot for her.

But that’s it for day 24, a day of bottle-washing, more bottle-washing and more bottle-washing.  Oh, and Helena says hi.

Seule 384 a faire.

Alors, a 12hr30, on apprit notre déjeuner.

Seule 304 a faire !

A 20hr30, on apprit notre diner.

Oh, Helena dire bonjour.
