Laziness, chestnuts and mystery foods – WWOOF – Day 15 29/09/19

I am doing WWOOF – a month-long programme where I am working on a French farm.  I am writing a daily blog about my experiences.  I will write in English and French.  My French isn’t perfect and there will be mistakes.  And I may use Frenglish.  I welcome all corrections.  I tend to transliterate more than translate, but I’m working to improve this.  Considering this, the French sections of the blog won’t be exact word-for-word translations from the English.  Firstly, the language doesn’t work like that and secondly, I make jokes and references in the English that won’t translate over to the French.

Today was Sunday and thus it was my day off.  I didn’t have any work and I didn’t do very much.  The weather wasn’t great, so I didn’t go cycling either.

After a lazy early, early morning, I typed up the last couple of diary entries (super-interesting, I know) and I finished season 4 of Z Nation.  Have you watched it? Let me know what you thought.  At 13hr30, we had lunch; Oceane had returned and her reaction to…

I still don’t know what this was, was to flinch and run away in disgust.

I jokingly said “children” to Elisabeth, although Oceane heard me.  Oops.  Although when I more closely inspected the food, I retracted my comment.  Matthias didn’t know what it was, and I commented it looked like dog food.  Maybe it was pate, but I really don’t know.

Anyway, I had an absolutely wild afternoon, and by that, I mean, I did very little.  I wrote up my reviews of Kill Bill Volume 1, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and It Chapter 2. (insert links) If you’ve seen them, let me know your thoughts below.  Also, I had a nap.  I know before I’ve said that I’m not Spanish and thus I don’t sleep in the middle of the afternoon, but this was the evening, so it’s okay.

At 20h30, we had dinner.  During meals, Elisabeth, Matthias and Oceane naturally talk among themselves.  I’m never sure whether I should be listening in or whether I should mind my own business.  Also, sometimes they speak with such passion that I’m not sure if they’re arguing or not.

For dinner, we had roasted chestnuts.  I said they’re very popular in London now, although I’m not sure.  I don’t like them.  They remind me of the sugar cane that I ate in Uganda – how I had to strip away layers and layers of bark for little reward.

Matthias roasted the chestnuts on the fire oven and we naturally teased him for his luddite-ways.  But he argued that although he might be a luddite, he has a closer connection to nature and animals than most.  I agreed, arguing that in the city, there is a definite disconnect between our meat and where it comes from.  When I was initially looking at WWOOF farms, one farm said they made meat from cows.  I thought this meant they worked in an abbatoir.  I considered going there, as I thought learning about that would be super interesting.

But that’s it for day 15, a day of laziness, chestnuts and mystery food.

French

MDR. (insert picture)

Alors, j’ai un tres hautement apres-midi.  Pas vraiment, j’ai fait rien.  J’écris mon reviews pour les filmes : Kill Bill Volume 1, Once Upon a time in Hollywood and It chapter 2.

Alors, à 20hr30, on apprit notre diner.  Naturellement, à diner, Matthias, Elisabeth et Oceane parle avec each other.  Je ne suis jamais certain je devrais ecouter ou I should mind my own business.

We teased him for being a Luddite.
